Bargain Designer Cushions

One of my lovely clients had this gorgeous navy sofa custom made for her a little while ago. She purchased some beautiful cushions to match but has decided they don’t work with the rest of the room and is switching them out for something else. They’ve hardly been used and are excellent quality so if anyone would like to purchase these cushions for a bargain price see pricing info below and shoot me an email if you’d like them… I’m a little tempted!!! There are multiples of each cushion available too.

5 cushions on lounge

Pink Stripe Cushions – $70 (RRP $125)

Palm Beach Project Update

It’s only a week away from being revealed! All the major furniture pieces are in place (besides the West Elm coffee table because it’s apparently disappeared into thin air…Not happy…) And all that’s left are last minute touch ups and placing all the pretty decor pieces around the apartment next week.

This apartment fit out has not been smooth sailing. There’s been drama after drama and we had from the 1st of August until the 26th of September to get it all finished and I’m proud to say we were able to stick to our deadline!

Here’s a little peek at the progress so far.

Little Quarters Illustration & Giveaway

Earlier this week I was introduced to this sweet online store called Little Quarters after owner Sarah emailed me when she found out we both had a common love of skulls. Working in the online space I love finding new sites and exploring them and when I find one that is beautifully designed I always want to share it with others. This one was no exception.

Little Quarters

Sarah as passionate collector is a graphics designer with a background in fashion design, she’s worked with some big names in fashion but decided it was time to do something for herself and started Little Quarters. Travel is a huge influence on Sarah’s drawings and the recent passing of her sister encouraged her to follow her dreams and start the business. Here’s a little insight into Little Quarters and Sarah’s inspiration… Sarah is kindly offering one unframed print to a Nest blog reader so please comment below with the print you would most like in your house and why to enter the competition. Winner will be announced Friday 13th Sept.

1. Where did the illustration idea stem from?

“They say what you do when you’re procrastinating is what you should do as a career”. I have been so fortunate to figure this out for myself, although still working on achieving it as a career in Little Quarters. After uprooting and moving from Geelong, Victoria at the beginning of 2012, to Sydney, I fell naturally into concentrating on my own work and in particular my Illustrations, doing what I love most.

Having spent 18 amazing months in Sydney, surrounding myself with as much art as physically possible, I have now returned to Victoria to be with family due to the recent passing of my beautiful sister who lost her fight with leukemia. This sad time has concreted within me that life really is precious, and we should all spend our time doing exactly what we love and doing what makes us truly happy!

2. You have a repeating skull theme happening, was that intentional?

My current SKULL+BONES series was sparked by a trip to Mexico, and experiencing the Mexican celebrations of Día de Muertos (The Day of The Dead). The celebrations really opened my eyes to how we view skulls. I was fascinated by the amount of decorations made for this celebration and so it got me thinking about skulls as a graphic and symbol.
From the time you look at one of my skull illustrations, you don’t know if I have drawn a boy or a girl, a black man or a white women, someone who is gay, straight or whether they suffer from an illness, have a disability, have any scars, whether they are beautiful, ugly, rich or poor… You know nothing! Other than in its simplest form the skull is familiar. The simplistic connection we have and the beauty of knowing that it’s another human being, stripped back, with no judgment… And that’s beautiful.

3. Are you self-taught or did you study?

Ever since I was a little girl, I have always drawn. I was always found happy with a pencil in my hand, and a colouring book under my arm. I studied graphic design at the Gordon TAFE, in Geelong, Victoria. However I have never studied traditional illustration so I am self-taught in that aspect. I’m finding my design and fashion background falls hand in hand with my illustration work. I’m really enjoying the journey of discovering new techniques within my illustrations as I progress.

 5. What is one thing you’d love to draw but never quite nailed?

Ahhh… tree’s, really realistic looking tree’s, and masculine men. Most of my men look a bit girly! With objects I’m not too familiar with, I try to research the objects I want to put into the artwork and study them and to see how I can best create the illustration. I try to create a realistic feel to my work, although still trying to master this. I am actually in the process of quoting a commission piece, of which my client is after a tree of life. I’m hoping the job goes ahead as I’m really looking forward to the challenge.

6. Any advice to other illustrators out there looking to create their own range like yours?

Take that leap of faith and go for it. There are so many tools out there to help with starting up a small business.

It is hard work, and you do need to be dedicated, and have a real passion for it, but its so rewarding! It’s really exciting to see your work being enjoyed by others. It sounds cliché but life really is too short to not be doing what you love. I get to draw every day, and I love that! Whatever you find yourself drawn to, just have some fun with it! What have you got to loose?

It also helps if you have an incredible partner who will make you late night cups of tea, when your working away on a piece and lends a hand with packaging illustrations for posting out to customers for you. My partner really is my backbone, he keeps me going, and we have heaps of fun at the same time.
Illustrations are only just the start for this talented illustrator so keep your eyes peeled! Follow Sarah on Facebook or Instagram.

Trade Fair Insight

Equator Homewares Stand

Equator Homewares Stand

Each year there are several trade fairs held across the country. I usually attend all of the Sydney ones and the August Melbourne fairs. I flew down to Melbourne this year for the fairs to see what all of my suppliers have on offer for the second half of the year. It’s always a big few days but I really enjoy catching up with my suppliers and seeing the new ranges – lots of ooh’s and ahh’s! Equator Homewares, a supplier of really lovely Hamptons style sofas, solid timber furniture and outdoor furniture interviewed me about my experience at the latest fairs and you can read about it here. The blog post goes into detail about exactly how much effort is put into a trade fair stand together and boy it’s not easy!

The Palm Beach Project

Palm Beach - AugustIt’s time to reveal an exciting new project I’ve been working on. If you’re a follower of Interiors Addict or my page you’ll know that we’ve teamed up to style and decorate a holiday rental apartment in Palm Beach. You can read all about it on Jen’s blog and follow the progress of the project on both of our blogs. So far we’re at the planning and product ordering stage. The sofa will be ready in two weeks and there’s a truck load of furniture leaving Melbourne in a fortnight. I cannot wait to share more!

The Home Spring Launch Styling

As most of you know I work part-time for as a buyer and stylist. Just last week I got together with our lifestyle stylist Marj Silva to style a Spring lunch party for an intimate party of media guests at Gazebo in Elizabeth Bay.

Here are some photos from the lunch taken by the very talented Lisa of Wander & Scout.

The theme we went with was a spring woodlands look with faux moss rocks, balls and pads styled with gorgeous woodland creatures from Have You Met Miss Jones.

Giggly Rose Cocktail, Marj & I, Hanging Flowers

We were up early the day before the lunch to visit the Flower Markets, neither of us had been before and despite the 5am arrival time it was a wonderful experience that I highly recommend (even if you just go once!). We created pretty poseys for the vases on the tables, flower bombs using foam oasis balls and carnations with their stems cut off and then threaded cotton string through the heads of some carnations so we could string them from the ceiling. And my lovely florist friend Claire at Willow & Dune created the sweetest little terrariums I have EVER seen!

It all came together beautifully and we were so pleased with our styling efforts!

Look Workshop Wrap Up

What a fun weekend I had in Orange for the very first Jumbled Workshop. It was such a pleasure to spend the weekend with so many lovely ladies talking design and decoration! I ran two workshops, one on Saturday and another on the Sunday. The workshop consisted of a little speech from me outlining my golden rules of decorating, how to mix and match styles and a few other vital decorating tips! After that everyone got to work making their own mood boards to inspire and kick start the decor process of a certain room back home. I wandered the tables giving advice and it was so nice to see that some very well prepared visitors had brought photos and floor plans for me to see and help with. Everyone then had the chance to browse around the shop and purchase some new goodies for their homes. Here’s a few pics of the workshops and the gorgeous store that is Jumbled (you can also buy online!)

It was lovely to read this workshop participants wrap up of the weekends events too! Thanks for the mention Mandy!

I thoroughly enjoyed myself and really loved the town of Orange too! So I hope that I can travel further around NSW at least to begin with and meet many more lovely people. If you’d like to participate in a decorating workshop and you’re in a rural or regional town please click through to my Look Workshops service page and tell me where you’re located so I can add it to my wish list of places to visit!

Post Holiday Blues

I’m so sorry I’ve neglected the blog for the last few weeks, I been busy clocking up some serious kilometres! I spent 10 days in Singapore and Malaysia flew home for less than 24 hours then back on a plane again to Melbourne for Life in Style, Reed and Home & Giving trade fairs for 3 days then home for 3 days and up to Orange for the Jumbled Workshop! It’s good to be home and catching up on things, there’s so much to do I don’t quite know where to start…

Here’s a few pics from my trip, I’ll be posting all about the Jumbled workshop tomorrow.

Singapore was hot and humid but a lovely change from chilly Sydney.

Drinks on top of Marina Bay Sands (57 floors high!) – Inside Raffles Hotel – My Anchor Towel at Sentosa Island – Fullerton Bay Hotel Waiting Area – Watermelon and Baby’s Breath Cocktail (YUM!)

The Petronas Towers – Art seen at a nearby restaurant – Table Topics a fun game at breaky – Sephora goodies – The hotel infinity pool

It was such a lovely break away and a nice change to be in the hot humid weather but I really don’t think I could live in either country for an extended period of time!

Now back to business!! So many emails to catch up on!

See you later Sydney!

I’m heading off on a holiday this week! I will be going on a girls trip visiting Singapore and Kuala Lumpar for some time in the sun on Sentosa Island and shopping til I drop in KL.  I cannot wait for some R&R and some sunshine, Sydney’s outdone itself this past weekend but 31 degree days are a little more tempting even with the humidity! I’ve been to both cities a few times but if anyone has any shopping, restaurant, bar or other suggestions they would be greatly appreciated! Less than 24 hours after landing from my trip I’m flying down to Melbourne for three days for Life In Style, Reed and Home & Giving trade fairs… No rest for the wicked!

Singapore + KL

I will be posting pics of my travels on Facebook and Instagram so keep your eyes peeled!!!

P.S. I will have very limited access to emails from July 25th until August 7th.
