Bronte/Coogee Homewares Tour

Yesterday, Jen and I went to meet Melissa from The Design Hunter in Bronte. What a stunning store. Both Jen and I agreed we could just move straight in. It was so clear Melissa’s selections throughout the store meant a lot to her and everything had been carefully hand picked. I wanted to stay all day!

The Design Hunter

While we were in the area we decided to pop into in Coogee, neither of us had ever been before despite wanting to for a long time! It didn’t disappoint, it’s full of gorgeous goodies sourced from all over the place! So if you’re in the Bronte/Coogee area I recommend you stop by both of these stores.

It’s obvious how much love has been poured into this little guy, there’s so many things hiding in the bowl, rocks, moss, dirt etc. all to keep the pretty plants happy. He makes for a nice desk accessory don’t you think!?

MindFOOD article

A few weeks ago I was interviewed for a story in magazine about being made redundant and how I coped. A few years ago I was working for an interior designer and 9 months into the job was made redundant and how I started Nest Designs. I’ve included the text below because the article comes out quite small!

“I was working for an interior designer who had to make my job redundant after nine months. It was a week before Christmas, and I thought, ‘Oh, right. Now what?’ Trying to find a job over Christmas, then the January holidays, was pretty much impossible. It was really poor timing and scary.

However, I also felt relieved, because I’d reached the point in the job where I was starting to wonder what my career progression would be.

I still lived at home, so was lucky in that regard, and I decided I would travel. When I came back, I really wanted to start my own business.

Finding clients was the biggest challenge I had building my own business. I had no trouble setting up the website d3367525.i238.quadrahosting.com.au, and using social media … but then it was just a matter of waiting. I mainly stuck to online advertising, and using Twitter and Facebook, to get my name out there.

Social media has worked an absolute treat; it’s amazing. I don’t really pay for advertising anymore because I just use my social media networks. I can get clients simply by posting a photo on Instagram. Ten years ago this would not have been possible. I would have just had to have waited until I got a new job.

The important thing is to not lose hope, because there is always going to be something, even if it’s a job in a cafe down the road. I had friends who finished uni the same time as me and had taken jobs in retail just because there was nothing else on offer.

I did a short course in business planning, as it was important for me to use the time wisely after I was made redundant, and not just sit around moping. You just need to get out there and do something.”

Sniff Soy Candles Christmas Range

have just launched the sweetest sounding Christmas candles! From Figgy Pudding (YUM!) to Christmas Tree, there’s gotta be one to please everyone. For the month of November there is free shipping on all candles!

I asked owners Ally & Toni to tell me a little more about Sniff and the correct candle burning etiquette (it’s not as easy as it sounds!)

1. When did you start Sniff Soy Candles and why?

Toni: Sniff Soy Candles started in January 2011 but making candles was always a love of mine and people kept asking me for them so I decided to see how they’d sell.
Ally: I’d just come back from a brief period of living in New York and was keen to start my own business, I thought teaming up with Toni was a recipe for success!

2. Describe a typical day at SSC HQ

Toni: Hectic! We come in and check emails for orders and our social media, polish and label from the candles made the previous day and have a quick pow wow to plan out the day. I design our labels and packaging so I’ll work on that while also researching new fragrance and essential oils we could use to create scents in the future. We pour candles in the afternoon which is very soothing and they set overnight in the perfect temperature.
Ally: I also spend some time delivering our candles to our local stockists, chatting to them about what works, which candles are selling the best and generally catching up. I’ll also visit new stockists, deliver candles to media and spend time putting together PR campaigns and marketing material.

3. How did you decide on the Christmas range?

Toni: I wanted to do lovely things that remind me of the festive season, but scents that will suit all tastes. The Candy Cane is fresh and uplifting, Festive Pomander is spicy and citrusy and reminds me of cold Christmases in England.
Ally: I absolutely love scents which evoke favourite foods and occasions. Figgy Pudding is rich and comforting and everybody needs the scent of a real Christmas Tree in their home.

4. What is your favourite Christmas scent?

Ally: Mine is Figgy Pudding, it reminds me of a lovely combination of all things Christmas – food, family and rum!
Toni: It depends on what mood I’m in but Candy Cane is great for giving us a lift in the morning and the Festive Pomander is wonderful and envelops the whole studio.

5. How do you get the most life out of a candle?

Toni: Keep an unlit candle next to your bed for a subtle scent which will waft gently through your room, I like Sunday Wash Line for my bedside.
Ally: Don’t burn your candle in drafty spot or in a room without people in it to enjoy it! For safety reasons too of course!

6. What’s the correct candle burning etiquette?

Ally: Trim the wick to 5mm before lighting and then let the wax pool melt until it reaches the edge of the candle, this will give you a great scent throw and also make the candle burn cleanly all the way through.
Toni: Don’t burn your candle for more than 4 hours in a row. Burn your candle when you’re home alone or with loved ones, based on the atmosphere you’d like to create.

The Home Launch Party

Dalani had a little facelift last week and got a brand new name – The Home. To celebrate we threw a party on a rooftop in Surry Hills. Here’s a peek at the party! Marj Silva (Stylist & Buyer for The Home) and I had two busy days setting up for the party, organsing furniture, fireplaces, rugs, food, drinks etc. It was perfect weather and we all had a great night mingling with suppliers and our friends in the industry.
